Nancy Hardy (voiceover) Ah, Paris...I remember that city well.
The scene today is in Karen’s apartment. It is a minimalist affair, with beige walls unadorned, off-white fridge free of any magnets or marker boards, and floors burdened with only a tall, high-backed chair to sit at the bar counter that separates her kitchen from her living room, a coffee table, low sofa, and television arranged for easy (or at least non pain inducing) viewing in said living room, and a king-sized bed and armoire in her bedroom.
From how little decoration there is, it’s clear she has not spent much time here.
Karen Hardy (off-screen) Yeah, Mom, I know all the stories.
The camera pans over to show Karen in her kitchen, making herself a shake or smoothie in her blender. Her face shows how enthralled she is by her mother’s exploits.
Perfect deadpan. Her protein shake that looks a lot like a fruit smoothie is more interesting to her than stories she’s not entirely sure are true anyway. Despite this, her mother continues in the same whimsical tones. When she wants, it’s clear that Nancy has an enchanting voice.
Nancy Hardy (voiceover) Why, I remember one night in Paris, in-between takes--
Karen Hardy Mom--
Nancy Hardy (voiceover) --my co-star told me that I had the most beautiful eyes he’d ever seen.
Karen Hardy (imitating Nancy) And now I have those eyes. (as herself) I get it, Mom. You’ve told me this at least fifty times.
For the first time, the exaggerated romanticism of Karen’s mother leaves her voice as she speaks in a disappointed tone.
Nancy Hardy (voiceover) Then why didn’t you pursue a career in acting or modeling?
Karen Hardy (annoyed) Because, Mother, as I have said at least fifty times, I was not satisfied with a job where I could make money by doing nothing. I want to be one-of-a-kind.
Karen flexes her bicep a little as her arm reaches out to pulse the blender and grins a little at the sight of it moving beneath her skin.
Karen Hardy I think I’m doing pretty good so far.
You can practically hear the disdain in Nancy’s voice.
Nancy Hardy (voiceover) Karen, you are in a business that kills people.
Karen Hardy Because being a model is totally a healthy lifestyle. Hell, you married a football player!
Nancy Hardy (voiceover) After he’d given up the sport.
Karen Hardy Not by choice.
Nancy Hardy (voiceover) Which is the point, a point I don’t think you understand. If you have a bad night as an actress, your life goes on. If you have a bad night as a wrestler, you could die, or become permanently disabled. Where’s your choice then?
Karen rolls her eyes as she pours her smoothie into a large glass.
Karen Hardy That is a risk that I am choosing to take. I’m a big girl, I can do that kind of thing.
The disdain in Karen’s mother turns white hot and acidic.
Nancy Hardy (voiceover) You would have turned out alright if it hadn’t been for--
BLEEP
Karen Hardy (muttering) Not really in the mood for your tirades.
Karen turns her phone on vibrate, then promptly ignores it as her mother immediately calls her back. She takes a big gulp of her protein smoothie, then sits it down and faces the camera.
Karen Hardy Well I was hoping that would be a nice family piece about how Mom has history in Paris and I plan to make history there as well, but that didn’t really work out too well. I guess you can guess where I get my drive to succeed from.
Spoiler: not her mother
Karen Hardy Well, as you can see, I am told a lot that I am making the wrong decision, going down the wrong path, or something else along those lines, and some people are even meaner about it than my mother, believe it or not. Over the years I’ve been bullied a lot.
I mean, I didn’t always look this way.
That’s why I’m glad I’m facing Jordan in Paris. I saw his intro video for his match with Jin, so I know about his thing about bullying the bullies. Honestly, I like it. Seems like I remember hearing about someone who had that a similar schtick years ago. Wonder what ever happened to that guy?
Karen shakes her head, trying to focus. She takes another gulp of her shake.
Karen Hardy Sorry, getting off topic. The point is that I look forward to having a good match with Jordan. He seems like a cool guy to hang out with, and looks like he’d be a good training partner.
Hopefully there’s no hard feelings when the match is over and he's the one looking up at the lights.
Karen smiles at the camera for a bit, then turns her attention to her breakfast as the scene fades out.
