Last fall, a new player arrived on the scene of televised pro wrestling. Wednesday nights started heating up as El Rey Network began airing Lucha Underground. Coming from Boyle Heights in SoCal, Lucha Underground emanates from a grungy, grimy warehouse known as The Temple, where various wrestlers/luchadores fight for pride, championships, and "unique opportunities."
It brings in notables from across the wrestling world, in particular Mexico, as numerous luchadores from AAA have appeared on the scene. It also presents its matches and its stories in unique ways, with its backstage segments being filmed in a much more cinematic fashion than other mainstream wrestling shows. There are even suggestions of supernatural themes, what with one luchador being a man who rises from his grave stronger than ever and another being a literal motherfucking dragon.
It airs Wednesday nights on El Rey Network at 8pm. If you don't get El Rey, scope out this link to a DailyMotion playlist someone put together of every episode so far.
Who's Who
Dario Cueto - The owner, promoter, and authority figure in Lucha Underground, Cueto is a manipulative bastard par excellence. He promises his fighters "unique opportunities" for winning matches, and keeps everyone busy fighting one another instead of coming after him. He loves violence, and seems to be using LU as a means to give offerings to "the ancient gods." He wears a key around his neck, a key to a cage underneath The Temple which contains a monster known as Matanza, whom Cueto has called his "brother."
Prince Puma - A masked luchador from Boyle Heights, Puma's ancestry comes from one of the ancient Aztec tribes. He was trained by Konnan and very quickly established himself as the premier competitor in LU with his unique high-flying style. Puma doesn't talk much, preferring to let Konnan do the talking and making his point in the ring. Puma was the inaugural Lucha Underground Champion. Beneath the mask, Puma is also known as indie wrestler Ricochet.
Finisher: 630 Senton
Johnny Mundo - Formerly known by various other names (such as John Morrison), the man now known as Johnny Mundo came back to wrestling because of the opportunities offered by LU. Combining American junior-heavyweight wrestling with parkour maneuverability, Mundo remains a popular figure in The Temple, and though he's fought alongside the tecnicos in the past, Mundo is ultimately looking for glory for himself. This has led to Mundo turning rudo and aligning himself with Dario Cueto.
Finisher: "End of the World"/"Fin del Mundo" (split-legged corkscrew moonsault)
Alberto El Patrón - Coming from a proud lucha libre heritage-- the son of Dos Caras, nephew of Mil Mascaras and Sicodelico, cousin to Sicodelico Jr. and El Hijo de Sicodelico-- Alberto El Patrón is lucha royalty. After his stint in WWE under the name Alberto Del Rio came to a close, he returned to his native country and instantly became one of the top tecnicos in Mexico, and soon won the AAA Mega Championship from Texano Jr. Now he's come to Lucha Underground to further cement his legacy, and he doesn't care if his attitude rubs you the wrong way. He's there to become champion, but of course, you already knew that. (wink)
Finisher: Cross Armbreaker
Mil Muertes - As a young boy, Pascual Mendoza and his family were caught in an earthquake in Mexico City. His family perished, and he spent days pinned in the rubble with their bodies. When he emerged from the rubble, he had changed, and soon became the terrifying force known as Mil Muertes-- "1000 Deaths." With his imposing figure and raw strength, Mil Muertes has cut a path through LU, especially after being "resurrected" following his Grave Consequences match with Fenix, returning stronger than ever. Mil Muertes is intricately tied to the enigmatic Catrina, who serves as his manager or valet. Cryptically and worryingly, Catrina has stated that since his resurrection, Mil Muertes cannot be stopped by any man, living or dead, including Matanza. Beneath the mask, Mil Muertes has also been known as El Mesias or Ricky Banderas.
Finisher: "Flatliner" (reverse STO), "Dagger in the Heart" (spear)
Fenix - The luchador who evokes the spirit of the mythical bird that rises from the ashes, Fenix is known as the "Man Who Will Not Die." He exhibits the style typical of Mexican tecnicos, with high-flying aerial maneuvers and an incredible resiliency. He became embroiled in a feud with Mil Muertes, becoming the first man in LU to defeat him, and briefly had Catrina turn to become his valet instead. Following the Grave Consequences match, however, Fenix went back to fighting and soaring alone.
Finisher: Corkscrew somersault senton
Pentagon Jr. - The dark side of lucha libre, Pentagon Jr. has studied the ancient martial arts and exhibits "cero miedo" (zero fear) in the ring. After losing some matches to Fenix and being turned on by Chavo Guerrero, Pentagon started serving a new master, to whom he has dedicated his matches and the "sacrifices" of his opponents in the ring, snapping his victims' arms with a violent armbar variant. Who this master is remains a mystery.
Finisher: "Fear Factor" (package piledriver), chickenwing Fujiwara armbar.
Sexy Star - The premiere female competitor in Lucha Underground, Sexy Star is fearless, not backing down from any threats and taking on anyone in the ring, no matter how outmatched she might seem. Her determination alone makes her a viable threat to anyone she locks up with, and she has become one of LU's top tecnicos. She has feuded with Chavo Guerrero and most recently, Pentagon Jr.
King Cuerno - An accomplished hunter, the luchador King Cuerno now turns his sights on more dangerous prey. Evoking an ancient god of the hunt with his mask and name (which could be translated as "Horned King"), Cuerno is very methodical in his style, taking his time and stalking his prey before exploding into action. He is a dangerous competitor and should never be underestimated. He is also known as the rudo luchador El Hijo del Fantasmo.
Finisher: "Thrill of the Hunt" (Samoan driver), "La Fleche del Infierno" (tope suicida)
Cage - From the 559 (Fresno) comes one of the most physically powerful forces on the LU roster, a relentless fighter that only cares about winning championships and doesn't respect lucha tradition in the slightest. They call him Cage. Within his first couple of weeks on LU, Cage picked a fight with Prince Puma, and then tore the LU Championship belt in half with his bare hands. Since then, he's been aligned with King Cuerno and Texano Jr., making a fearsome alliance. Fans of PWG will instantly recognize him as Brian Cage. But whatever you call him, one thing is clear: he's not a man, he's a MACHINE!
Finisher: Weapon X (Gory Special Reverse STO), Discus Lariat
Texano Jr. - One of the biggest rudos in Mexico today, Texano Jr. came to Lucha Underground specifically because of Alberto El Patrón. Texano had been the longest reigning AAA Mega Champion when Alberto beat him to win the title, and so Texano came looking to exact revenge. Never seen without his signature bullrope, Texano is rotten to the core. He soon aligned himself with King Cuerno and Cage, but recently has kicked off a heated rivalry with DelAvar Daivari.
Hernandez - Familiar to fans of TNA Impact, Hernandez came into LU at Konnan's behest, but it soon became clear that Hernandez didn't care about his ties to Konnan from their L.A.X. days. All Hernandez cares about is himself and further acquiring championship reigns to his name. Hernandez is remarkably agile for a big man, and has the power to go with it, making him a serious competitor.
Drago - Hailing from "El Inframundo" (the netherworld), Drago is a literal motherfucking dragon. He has taken human form, but do not take him lightly. Drago is a fiercely determined luchador that wants nothing more than to fight in the Temple. He was caught up in a rivalry with Aero Star that culminated in Drago winning a best-of-5 series, but then failed to capture the LU Championship, leading to Drago's banishment. Now, however, Drago has returned, more reptilian than ever, and he wants the title again.
Finisher: Flip DDT
Aero Star - From the cosmos, the high-flying Aero Star is one of the premier high-flyers on the LU roster. He was long embroiled in a competitive rivalry with Drago, though ultimately failed to win the best-of-5 series that they had. Aero Star remains a fan favorite.
Finisher: Imploding 450 Splash, "Trust Fall" (springboard reverse tope)
Son of Havoc - A masked biker from the Open Road, Son of Havoc struggled to find respect in the early going of LU, accumulating losses, which didn't sit well with his girlfriend Ivelisse. Fed up with her abuse, Son of Havoc finally dumped her and picked up a win over his rival Angélico, but was then forced to team with both by Dario Cueto to compete in the Trios Championship Tournament. While the three didn't get along, they managed to put their differences aside to win the tournament, and continue to defend the titles against every team that Cueto sends their way. Beneath the mask, Son of Havoc may be familiar as indy wrestler "M-Dogg 20" Matt Cross.
Finisher: Shooting Star Press
Ivelisse - The self-proclaimed "Baddest Bitch in the Building," Ivelisse came to LU as the girlfriend of Son of Havoc, but when he started losing matches left and right, she became increasingly angry at him, and abusive toward him. When Angélico started flirting with her, she was more disgusted than flattered, and she was furious when Son of Havoc dumped her because of her grating personality. However, all three were forced to team together to compete in the Trios Championship Tournament, putting their differences aside long enough to win the titles-- despite Ivelisse breaking her ankle in the penultimate match in the tournament. Ivelisse has continued to compete despite her ankle being in the cast and her being on crutches, and even helped her team win a Ladder Match by climbing the ladder to get the titles.
Angélico - From South Africa, the high-flying Angélico will flirt with any pretty girl he sees, and this is what immediately got him in hot water with Son of Havoc and Ivelisse, and eventually forced to team with them as a trio to compete for the Trios Championship. After winning the tournament, Angélico and his team were forced into one final match against The Crew, during which he made himself famous with a jaw-dropping, death-defying running dive from the top of Dario Cueto's office into the ring to flatten The Crew. He repeated the feat with a dropkick off the top of Cueto's office during a Ladder Match to help retain the titles. Angélico may not like his partners, but he'll be damned if he's going to let that stop him from winning matches.
Finisher: "Fall of the Angels" (running crucifix buckle bomb)
DelAvar Daivari - Coming from a very wealthy Persian family that owns most of the land in Boyle Heights, Daivari (whom you may remember from WWE under that name, or his run in TNA as Sheik Abdul Bashir) was initially just a fan seated in the crowd, sipping whiskey and checking his phone. Then, during the Trios Championship Tournament, when Texano Jr. got launched into him and spilled his drink, Daivari went off, slapping Texano around and tossed into the chairs. He soon signed with LU and has immediately made himself a hated rudo with his arrogance and flaunting of his wealth. The self-proclaimed "Golden Warrior" has acquired the muscle of Big Ryck and is looking to capture more prestige for himself.
Big Ryck - The largest man on the LU roster, Big Ryck's overriding interest is money. He worked for Dario Cueto because the man paid well, but ultimately Cueto betrayed him and had The Crew turn on Ryck, burning out his eye with a lit cigar. Ryck returned, with his own gang, his cousin The Mack and the masked Killshot. When they washed out of the Trios Championship Tournament, Ryck found a new payday in working for DelAvar Daivari, even though it meant not bringing in The Mack as a partner. Big Ryck may be recognizable as the former Ezekiel Jackson from WWE's ECW.
Finisher: Standing side slam
The Mack - Cousin to Big Ryck, The Mack was brought in to watch his back and help him vie for the LU Trios Championship. Don't let his size fool you, The Mack is very agile for his weight and can turn heads with his moves. Recently, The Mack was seemingly betrayed by Big Ryck, who took a payday from DelAvar Daivari, then didn't lift a finger to help when Cage laid him out backstage. What this means for their relationship, remains to be seen. The Mack may be recognizable to indie wrestling fans as Willie Mack.
Finisher: The Pounce
Killshot - The masked man called Killshot was brought in by Big Ryck to help intimidate Dario Cueto, and helped lead Ryck and The Mack to the semi-finals of the Trios Championship Tournament. Tall and lean, Killshot is the high-flyer of their group, but he seemingly fell by the wayside after they washed out of the tournament. He has since resurfaced, however, and appears to be targeting King Cuerno, having been spotted watching him from the top of Cueto's office.
Finisher: Diving double stomp
The Crew - Dario Cueto's enforcers, Cortez Castro and Mister Cisco have been beating up anyone that Cueto points them toward, enjoying hurting people and using any weaponry they can lay their hands on to do it. They obey Cueto's word without question, especially since they were introduced to Matanza. The Crew even burned one of Big Ryck's eyes with a lit cigar at Cueto's command. Their number used to include Bael (aka indie wrestler B-Boy), but after failing Cueto once too often, Castro and Cisco literally fed Bael to Matanza, who ate Bael's face off. Cortez Castro may be recognizable as indie wrestler Ricky Reyes.
Finisher: Flapjack/lungblower combo
Chavo Guerrero - Proud scion of the Guerrero family, Chavo has a long lucha libre legacy to live up to... and he adheres to the old Guerrero credo of lying and cheating. After a loss to Blue Demon Jr. on the first episode of Lucha Underground, Chavo returned to his rudo ways, but after putting Blue Demon in the hospital, this was one betrayal too many, as Chavo was warned that "all of Mexico" was gunning for him. Chavo left LU, but it transpired that he'd been sent by Dario Cueto to eliminate Black Lotus, but was too late to get to her before Dragon Azteca. Now Chavo has returned to LU, aligned with Dario Cueto, who has paid for "around the clock protection" for Chavo from Mexico.
Finisher: Frog Splash
The Disciples of Death - These three dark denizens of the underworld arrived in LU on the heels of Mil Muertes' resurrection. Cloaked in black and wearing skull-themed masks, the trio of Barrio Negro, Trece, and El Sinestro de la Muerte follow the commands of Catrina. Very little is known about them, but they work exceptionally well as a unit, and appear to draw strength from the magic stone that Catrina carries with her. The very fact that they follow her and Mil Muertes means that they are, if one will excuse the pun, grave threats.
Super Fly - A luchador from Mexico City, the masked Super Fly immediately set out to live up to his name with his high-flying skills. However, very shortly thereafter, he and Sexy Star came to face one another in a match and both respected one another too much to go all out... which led Dario Cueto to make the match Mask-vs-Mask. Super Fly was defeated and Sexy Star tearfully unmasked him-- and then Pentagon Jr. came out and broke his arm just to piss off Sexy Star. Super Fly later made his return during a Submission Match between Sexy Star and Pentagon, and shocked the world by helping Pentagon win. What this means remains to be seen.
Catrina - An enigmatic femme fatale, Catrina came to Lucha Underground at the side of Mil Muertes, but since then it has become clear that rather than being his follower, she is the one in command of Mil's power. Carrying a stone with seemingly supernatural power, Catrina has exhibited some otherworldly powers of her own, teleporting behind people, summoning Mil Muertes back from beyond the grave, and controlling the might of the Disciples of Death. No one knows what her ultimate goal is, but she is a dangerous woman.
Konnan - A legendary luchador that has competed on both sides of the border and across the Caribbean, Konnan's wrestling days are past, but his mind is still sharp. He has helped train Prince Puma, and always seems to have the best in mind for him. With his steel cane in hand, Konnan is almost always at ringside for his protege. However, to hear Vampiro tell it, Konnan is a snake that will inevitably turn around to bite Puma in the ass.
Black Lotus - This Asian woman was seen for several weeks, watching events in the Temple from afar, before it became clear she has a beef with Dario Cueto, and Matanza. It transpired that her family was killed when her village was wiped out by Matanza, and she has come looking for revenge. She manged to find Matanza's cage beneath the Temple, but she was abducted by Dragon Azteca, who told her she was not ready to face him. Training extensively with Dragon Azteca, she eventually returned to the Temple, with the protection of Chavo Guerrero... who then immediately betrayed her. Captured by Chavo and The Crew, Dario Cueto had Black Lotus locked in a cage across from Matanza.
Dragon Azteca - A mysterious old luchador, Dragon Azteca was seen at the start of the first episode of Lucha Underground, finding Prince Puma and telling him about the Temple. He later returned and "kidnapped" Black Lotus for her own protection, explaining that he had been there on the day that Matanza destroyed her village, and training her so that she may one day get her revenge. Since she left, Dragon Azteca charged Chavo Guerrero with protecting her, but was almost immediately betrayed, as Chavo had sold out to Dario Cueto.
Matt Striker & Vampiro - The voices of Lucha Underground, Striker and Vampiro provide the play-by-play and color commentary for the show. Striker is very analytical (almost overly so) in his calls, but also known for adding some interesting viewpoints on things, frequently sprinkled with color from the legendary Vampiro, who in true color man fashion supports the rudos. Vampiro also has a long-seated mutual hatred for Konnan, leading him to always question Konnan's motives and accuse Konnan of just using Prince Puma for his own gain. Vampiro also hates seeing women getting threatened, almost getting in the ring to save ring announcer Melissa Santos from Pentagon Jr., and then actually getting in the ring to drive Pentagon off of Sexy Star.
